Today you will be taking ownership with our in-class goals and using the
resources I have for you below to take notes and gain understanding on our 5.RI.1 goals:
#1) Making Inferences
|
#2) Using and citing text evidence
|
I am always here to help you so if you need my help, please raise your hand!
** This is also an exercise in reading the directions. Please read every step! **

Read the steps below:
#1) Before we get started with our learning goals, open up your agenda. Under today's date, write down that you have WORD STUDY DESCRIPTIVE SENTENCES due on Thursday. Normally they'd be due Wednesday, but we don't have school!
#2) Are you sure you wrote it down in your agenda? Check that your buddy next to you wrote it down...
#3) Way to be a helpful friend! Now onto class...
#4) Open up your Literacy (purple) notebook to your "Mini Lesson" section. Open to a fresh sheet and write the date at the top right hand corner. (For your Information: I WILL BE CHECKING YOUR NOTES, KIDDOS! TELL YOUR FRIENDS!)
#5) Take 2-3 minutes and copy down this chart into your notebook. (Yes, the whole thing...even if you're not an artist, just do a quick doodle!) It doesn't have to be massive and take up a whole page. I recommend half a page! I just want you to record the information and understand it.

#5 a) Read over the anchor chart you just copied. What is it saying? It is saying that if you use what you already know and evidence from the text, you can make an INFERENCE. Some answer stems are:
- I infer...
- Perhaps...
- Maybe...

#6) In the quick video below you will practice making inferences. Rest your pencil and just pay attention without taking notes. It's great practice!
#7) Grab the packet from the green cubes to practice making inferences. It contains both fiction and nonfiction text, but don't forget to use what you KNOW (schema) + text evidence to come up with your inference.
#8) When you're done with this packet, check over your answers at the solution station. The Solution Station is located at the whiteboard to the left of the SmartBoard. Please put the Solution Station back where it belongs when you're done using it.
#9) When finished with the practice packet, think about any questions that you have. Can Ms. R help you with anything you're confused with? Please ask her if you do! If you don't have any questions, you have these three choices to choose from:
A) Get a head start on your descriptive sentences
for your Word Study words (due Thurs)
B) Re-watch the Flipped Video on your Word Pattern to
fully understand WHY your words are spelled the way they are.
C) Read your workshop book from your Book Box.
